• 1 cup pitted dates, chopped
• ½ cup dried apricots, chopped
• ½ cup dried figs, chopped
• ¼ cup candied orange or citron peel, chopped
• ¼ cup toasted almonds or walnuts, finely chopped
• ½ tsp ground cinnamon
• ¼ tsp ground cardamom
• ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
• Pinch of ground cloves
• Zest of 1 orange
• 2 tbsp brandy, rum, or orange juice (for soaking)
• ½ cup granulated sugar (for rolling)
• Optional: edible gold dust or silver dragées for vintage flair
Instructions
- In a food processor, pulse dates, apricots, figs, and candied peel until finely chopped but not pasty.
- Transfer to a bowl. Stir in nuts, spices, orange zest, and brandy. Mix well.
- Cover and let soak at room temperature 1–2 hours (or overnight in the fridge) for deeper flavor.
- Roll mixture into small Âľ-inch balls using slightly damp hands.
- Roll each ball in granulated sugar to coat evenly.
- Place on a tray and let rest 1 hour before serving—this helps them hold shape.
✨ Serve on a decorative plate with mulled wine or tea!
💡 Historical note: True “sugar plums” were labor-intensive candied treats from the 17th–19th centuries—this version honors that tradition with wholesome ingredients!
