Halloween Black Velvet Cookies 🖤🎃

  • Author: WAFA LI

Ingredients

• ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened (or vegan butter)
• ¾ cup granulated sugar
• 1 egg
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
• ¼ cup cocoa powder (unsweetened)
• 1 tbsp black food-safe gel coloring (or 2 tsp activated charcoal – use sparingly & safely)
• 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour (or gluten-free 1:1 blend)
• ½ tsp baking soda
• ¼ tsp salt
• ½ cup chocolate chips (optional, for extra gooeyness)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy (2–3 minutes).
  3. Beat in egg and vanilla until smooth.
  4. Mix in cocoa powder and black food coloring until fully blended (wear gloves if using gel).
  5. In another bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add to wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Fold in chocolate chips if using.
  6. Scoop tablespoon-sized balls of dough and place on trays (they spread slightly).
  7. Bake 9–11 minutes, until edges are set and centers are soft.
  8. Let cool on the tray 5 minutes—they’ll firm up as they cool. Then transfer to a wire rack.

Serve spooky:
• Dust with powdered sugar “ghosts”
• Add candy eyes or orange sprinkles
• Pair with milk in a cauldron-shaped cup!

💡 Make ahead: Dough can be chilled for thicker cookies. Freeze unbaked balls for quick treats later!
