Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup (150g) granulated sugar
- ¼ cup (25g) unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tsp baking powder
- ¼ tsp salt
- ½ cup milk
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ½ cup packed brown sugar
- ¼ cup (25g) unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1¼ cups hot water
Instructions
- Prep: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8×8″ or 9×9″ baking dish.
- Make cake batter: In a bowl, whisk flour, ¾ cup sugar, ¼ cup cocoa, baking powder, and salt. Stir in milk, melted butter, and vanilla until smooth. Spread evenly in baking dish.
- Make sauce layer: In a small bowl, mix brown sugar and ¼ cup cocoa. Sprinkle evenly over cake batter—do not stir.
- Add hot water: Slowly pour hot water over the back of a spoon onto the surface—do not mix. The magic happens during baking!
- Bake 35–40 minutes, until cake is set on top but sauce bubbles around edges.
- Serve warm in bowls, straight from the dish. Top with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream if desired.
💡 Pro Tips:
– Don’t stir after adding water—the layers form naturally as it bakes.
– For extra decadence, add chocolate chips to the batter or a splash of espresso powder to deepen flavor.
– Best served fresh—it loses its saucy texture when cooled.
