Irish Brown Bread (Makes Two Loaves): Hearty, Traditional, and Incredibly Easy

Ingredients

• 2 cups whole wheat flour • 2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 cup rolled oats • 1 cup wheat germ • 2 tsp baking soda • 1½ tsp salt • 2 cups buttermilk • ¼ cup honey • 2 tbsp melted butter


Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F
  2. Grease two 9×5 inch loaf pans
  3. Mix both flours, oats, wheat germ, baking soda, salt
  4. In separate bowl, whisk buttermilk, honey, melted butter
  5. Make well in center of dry ingredients
  6. Pour buttermilk mixture into well
  7. Stir until just combined (do not overmix)
  8. Divide batter between prepared pans
  9. Bake 40-45 minutes until toothpick comes clean
  10. Cool 10 minutes in pans
  11. Turn out onto wire racks
  12. Cool completely before slicing
