Description
Comforting, creamy, and made from scratch — this keto chicken and dumplings recipe is a low-carb twist on the Southern classic. Packed with tender chicken, soft dumplings, and rich gravy for a cozy, hearty meal!
Ingredients
For the Chicken Gravy Base:
2 cups shredded cooked chicken (rotisserie or homemade)
2 tbsp butter or ghee
2 tbsp almond flour or coconut flour (to keep it low-carb)
1½ cups chicken broth (or bone broth)
¼ cup heavy cream or full-fat coconut milk (for richness)
1 tsp garlic powder
½ tsp dried thyme or rosemary
Salt and pepper to taste
Optional: ¼ cup diced celery or carrots (low-carb friendly like carrots or parsnips)
For the Keto Dumplings:
½ cup almond flour
¼ cup coconut flour
½ tsp baking powder (aluminum-free)
Pinch of salt
2 tbsp melted butter or coconut oil
¼ cup water or unsweetened almond milk
1 egg (optional, for extra binding) FOR KETO/LOW-CARB VERSION:
Use almond flour-based dumplings and avoid starchy thickeners in the gravy. Substitute regular flour with coconut flour or konjac flour for a grain-free option.
Instructions
Make the Gravy:
In a large pot or skillet, melt butter over medium heat.
Add almond flour or coconut flour and whisk to create a roux — cook for 1–2 minutes to remove raw flour taste.
Gradually whisk in chicken broth , heavy cream , garlic powder , thyme , salt, and pepper until smooth and slightly thickened.
Stir in shredded chicken and optional diced veggies . Simmer gently while preparing dumplings.
Make the Dumplings:
In a bowl, mix almond flour , coconut flour , baking powder , and salt .
Add melted butter , water or almond milk , and egg if using. Mix into a soft dough — you may need to adjust liquid to reach a sticky but scoopable consistency.
Drop small spoonfuls of dumpling dough onto the simmering gravy.
Cook Together:
Cover and cook on low heat for 10–15 minutes (or steam in a covered pot), until dumplings are firm and cooked through.
Optional: Flip dumplings halfway through to cook evenly.
Serve warm in bowls or as a comforting one-pot keto dinner!
Notes
These reheat beautifully! Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze dumplings separately for quick meals later. Pair with steamed greens or keto biscuits for a complete comfort meal.
