Ingredients
• 1 lb (450g) Italian sausage, casings removed (mild or hot)
• ½ lb (225g) ground beef
• 1 small onion, diced
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
• 2 tbsp tomato paste
• 1 tbsp sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
• 1 tsp dried oregano
• 1 tsp dried basil
• ½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
• Salt & black pepper to taste
• 1 unbaked 9-inch deep-dish pie crust (or homemade)
• 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese (divided)
• ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
• 6 slices pepperoni (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a skillet over medium heat, cook sausage and ground beef until browned. Drain excess fat if needed.
- Add onion and sauté 4–5 minutes until soft. Stir in garlic and cook 30 seconds more.
- Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Simmer 10 minutes to thicken.
- Pour mixture into the unbaked pie crust.
- Sprinkle with 1½ cups mozzarella and Parmesan. Top with pepperoni (if using).
- Cover with foil and bake 30 minutes.
- Uncover and bake 10–15 more minutes, until bubbly and golden.
- Let rest 5 minutes before slicing. Serve hot!
