French Onion Burgers: Juicy, Cheesy, and Packed with Flavor

  • Author: WAFA LI

Ingredients

• 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 blend)
• Salt & black pepper to taste
• 1 tbsp olive oil or butter
• 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
• 1 tsp sugar (to help caramelize)
• ¼ cup beef broth or red wine
• 4 slices Swiss or provolone cheese
• 4 soft hamburger buns (or brioche)
• Optional: Dijon mustard or garlic aioli for spreading

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the onions: In a skillet over medium-low heat, warm olive oil. Add onions and sugar. Cook 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and sweet.
  2. Pour in beef broth and simmer 3–4 minutes until liquid evaporates and onions are jammy. Set aside.
  3. Form patties: Divide beef into 4 portions. Shape into patties slightly larger than your buns. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
  4. Cook burgers: Heat the same skillet over medium-high. Sear patties 4–5 minutes per side for medium. During the last minute, top each with a slice of cheese to melt.
  5. Toast buns: Lightly toast cut sides of buns in the skillet or toaster. Spread with Dijon or aioli if desired.
  6. Assemble: Place patty on each bun bottom. Pile high with caramelized onions. Top with the other half.

Serve with fries, coleslaw, or roasted potatoes for a classic diner-style meal!

💡 Make it better: Use a cast-iron skillet for perfect sear and fond. Deglaze with broth directly in the burger pan for extra flavor!
