Ingredients
• 1 sheet refrigerated pizza dough or crescent roll dough (or homemade)
• ½ lb (225g) ground Italian sausage or pepperoni, sliced
• 1 tbsp olive oil
• 1 small onion, diced
• 1 clove garlic, minced
• 1 cup marinara or pizza sauce
• 1 tsp Italian seasoning
• 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese (divided)
• ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese (divided)
• 1 egg
• ½ cup ricotta cheese (optional, for creaminess)
• Fresh basil, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9-inch pie dish or deep tart pan.
- Roll out pizza dough and press into the dish, fluting edges slightly. Prick base with a fork. Bake 8–10 minutes until lightly golden. Remove and set aside.
- In a skillet over medium heat, warm olive oil. Sauté onion 4–5 minutes until soft. Add garlic and cook 30 seconds more.
- Stir in sausage (if using raw), cooking until browned. Drain excess fat if needed.
- Add marinara sauce and Italian seasoning. Simmer 3–4 minutes. Remove from heat.
- In a bowl, mix ricotta (if using), ½ cup mozzarella, ¼ cup Parmesan, and egg.
- Spread meat-sauce mixture over the pre-baked crust. Spoon ricotta mixture on top and spread gently.
- Sprinkle with remaining mozzarella and Parmesan.
- Bake 20–25 minutes, until bubbly and golden on top.
- Let cool 5 minutes. Garnish with fresh basil and slice into wedges.
