Classic New Orleans Bread Pudding: Rich, Custardy, and Southern Comfort at Its Best

For the Bread Pudding:

  • 6 cups day-old bread, cubed
  • 2 cups milk
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup raisins (optional)

Vanilla Sauce:

 

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream or milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish.
  2. Place bread cubes into the dish and set aside.
  3. In a bowl, whisk milk, eggs, sugar, brown sugar, melted butter, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  4. Pour mixture evenly over the bread, pressing lightly so it absorbs.
  5. Let sit for 10 minutes, then add raisins if using.
  6. Bake for 40–45 minutes, until set and golden on top.
  7. For the sauce, melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
  8. Stir in sugar and cream, cooking until smooth and slightly thickened.
  9. Remove from heat and add vanilla.
  10. Drizzle warm sauce over bread pudding before serving.
