Irresistible Homemade Caramel: Smooth, Buttery, and Perfectly Sweet

Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 6 tbsp unsalted butter, cut into pieces
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (room temperature)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

 

  • 1/4 tsp salt (optional, for salted caramel)

Instructions

  1. Heat sugar in a heavy saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly until it melts and turns amber in color.
  2. Add butter carefully and whisk until fully melted and combined.
  3. Slowly pour in heavy cream while whisking continuously (mixture will bubble).
  4. Cook for 1–2 more minutes until smooth and slightly thickened.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla and salt.
  6. Let cool before using; caramel will thicken as it cools.
  7. Store in a sealed jar in the refrigerator.
