- 2 large sweet onions, cut into bite-sized chunks
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 cup buttermilk (or milk + 1 tbsp vinegar)
- Oil for frying
Dipping Sauce (optional):
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tsp horseradish or mustard
- 1/2 tsp paprika
Instructions
- Heat oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C).
- In a bowl, mix flour, cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, salt, and pepper.
- Dip onion pieces into buttermilk, then coat in flour mixture.
- For extra crispiness, repeat coating once more.
- Fry onions in batches for 2–4 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
- Remove and drain on paper towels.
- Mix dipping sauce ingredients in a small bowl.
- Serve hot with sauce.
