Ingredients

  • 2 large sweet onions, cut into bite-sized chunks
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or milk + 1 tbsp vinegar)
  • Oil for frying

Dipping Sauce (optional):

 

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp horseradish or mustard
  • 1/2 tsp paprika

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix flour, cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, salt, and pepper.
  3. Dip onion pieces into buttermilk, then coat in flour mixture.
  4. For extra crispiness, repeat coating once more.
  5. Fry onions in batches for 2–4 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  7. Mix dipping sauce ingredients in a small bowl.
  8. Serve hot with sauce.
